چکیده

In this paper we present and analyze a multi{level voting algorithm for preventing inconsistencies among replicated data in a distributed computer system. The algorithm is a layered combination of the well known write{all/read{one and majority consensus approaches. It avoids the disadvantages of the conventional at voting strategies in terms of message cost and availability, particularly in an environment with a large number of replicas which are supposed to be mostly read and only occasionally written. The feasibility of the proposed solution is demonstrated by performance measurements in a simulated network.

INCENTIVES TO CULTIVATE A PARTY VOTE IN CANDIDATE-CENTRIC ELECTORAL SYSTEMS Evidence From Brazil

A prominent question in comparative electoral studies concerns the so-called personal vote. Typically, scholars approach this question at a cross-national as opposed to a cross-party level. In this article, in contrast, the author focuses on the characteristics of parties, as opposed to the characteristics of electoral systems, as determinants of candidates’personal vote seeking. The author arg...

Multi-district preference modelling

Generating realistic artificial preference distributions is an important part of any simulation analysis of electoral systems. While this has been discussed in some detail in the context of a single electoral district, many electoral systems of interest are based on multiple districts. Neither treating preferences between districts as independent nor ignoring the district structure yields satis...

Which Electoral Formula Is the Most Proportional? A New Look with New Evidence

A ranking exists in electoral systems research of different electoral formulas—the mathematical functions governing the conversion of votes into legislative seats—in terms of both proportionality of seats and votes and favorability to the largest party. I reexamine this issue with new methods and new evidence, attempting to cross-validate previous rankings using a larger and more controlled dat...

Mixed electoral systems and electoral system effects: controlled comparison and cross- national analysis

Utilizing data from 15 countries that employ mixed electoral systems, we provide a crossnational analysis of the defining elements and potentially constraining effects of such systems. Using district level election results, we examine the effects of the proportional representation (PR) and single-member district (SMD) tiers of mixed systems separately and in combination. We also test the effect...

A UniJied Method of Evaluating Electoral Systems and Redistricting Plans*

We derive a unified statistical method with which one can produce substantially improved definitions and estimates of almost any feature of two-party electoral systems that can be defined based on district vote shares. Our single method enables one to calculate more efficient estimates, with more trustworthy assessments of their uncertainty, than each of the separate multifarious existing measu...
